St Patrick's Parade (United States)

Overall Visitor score: 4.5 out of 10

St Patrick's Day is bigger in the US than Ireland, the scale of the celebrations in New York, Boston and Chicago dwarfing those in Dublin. For our money, the best of all parades is Chicago, where every March 17 since 1962 green dye is added to the Chicago River to turn it a brilliant, vibrant emerald.

Crowds stand on river banks and bridges to watch the 11am transformation and then they join the marching bands, floats and other green-clad revelers for the 12noon parade start at Dearborn Street. The parade winds through the city streets for much of the afternoon; bars are busy, people are friendly; and the whole city is up for the craic. Expect it to be a late one!
